DIVINATION AND DIALOGUE
A conference hosted by the MA programme in the Cultural Study of Cosmology and Divination, Religious Studies, School of European Culture and Languages.
5-7 October 2007, University of Kent at Canterbury

This is an interdisciplinary conference to share and discuss new insights into divination arising from recent work – especially in religious studies, anthropology and history – which accords central importance to the practical and theoretical perspectives of the diviners themselves (who may also be theorists). It will also explore related issues such as ‘divinatory intelligence' and divinatory truth, ontology, and reflexivity.

Except in the case of keynote speakers, all papers will be circulated and read in advance by participants in order to encourage a high quality of discussion. Speakers will have 30 minutes to summarize or refine their papers and about 15 minutes in which to answer questions, followed by up to 30 minutes for discussion.

Confirmed speakers are as follows:

  • Mr Geoffrey Cornelius (Religious Studies, University of Kent )
  • Dr. Patrick Curry (Religious Studies, University of Kent )
  • Ms Dorian Greenbaum (Warburg Institute, University of London )
  • Prof. Stuart Harrop (Anthropology, University of Kent )
  • Dr. Martin Holbraad (Anthropology, University College London )
  • Prof. Philip M. Peek (Anthropology, Drew University )
  • Prof. Juha Pentikainen (Religious Studies, University of Helsinki )
  • Prof. Barbara Tedlock (SUNY, Buffalo )
  • Prof. Dennis Tedlock (SUNY, Buffalo )
  • Dr Angela Voss (Religious Studies, University of Kent )
